Biggest Ever Euro-Fine Hits Microsoft: $1.35BN

Fined by the European Commission for defying sanctions imposed on it by the EC for antitrust violations

The European Commission (EC), the executive arm of the European Union, today imposed a fine of $1.35 billion on Microsoft for defying sanctions imposed on it by the EC for antitrust violations, making Microsoft the first company in 50 years of EU competition policy that the Commission has had to fine for failure to comply with an antitrust decision.

"I hope that today's decision closes a dark chapter in Microsoft's record of non-compliance with the Commission's March 2004 decision," said Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes in a statement.

For its part, Microsoft released a statement saying that the fine imposed on by the EC concerned "past issues" and that the company was now looking to the future.
