Evidently Novell should be afraid – very afraid – because Canonical with its Ubuntu distribution, Dell's little playmate, the Linux Dell's pre-loading on a few of its PCs, clearly has designs on Novell's place in line behind Red Hat, the Linux leader.

You didn't answer why Novell should be afraid of Ubuntu. What we can understand in your article is that Ubuntu is gaining share and it's true that Novell will lose some to Canonical. If you already tried OpenSuse 10.3 you will see that you can manage power better than Ubuntu. I don't know why but OpenSuse run natively the hibernate option but I can't boot again my computer when I do it with Ubuntu. Also Compiz-fusion, hotplug, drivers ( including Opensource ATI ) and visualization are developed entirely financed by Novell. I want also say that the majority of closed programs that work well only run on Novell and Redhat OS ( Why I started to use OpenSuse instead of Ubuntu that I was using ). One note: the cds and the dvds aren't open-source because they include Nvidia and wifi drivers, flash and others closed-source programs that prevent to modify the discs. But you can redistribute it if people who use one of them accept the license of each of these program he installs. |
