SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/30/13 -- Joyent, the high-performance cloud infrastructure company, today released new metrics that highlight its continued dominance in the world of mobile and social gaming. Built for performance, reliability and real-time elastic scaling, Joyent is the only provider able to meet the demands of today's modern gaming providers. New case studies from Digital Chocolate, Mob Science and Sleepy Giant showcase how gaming companies can improve the gamer experience, while dramatically reducing cost per daily active user (DAU) by capitalizing on Joyent's performance-based infrastructure.
Modern gaming on mobile and social platforms brings with it a certain amount of uncertainty. A moderately successful game on Facebook can draw several thousand DAUs, while a hit could ramp up from thousands to millions of DAUs in a matter of days, making it difficult for companies to anticipate or manage such unpredictable user and data intensive workloads. Joyent's highly elastic cloud infrastructure is built to accommodate unpredictable traffic bursts in a way that other cloud infrastructures can't, allowing companies to scale dynamically based on the needs of their business instead of having to overprovision servers by up to 50 percent in anticipation of success. This helps social gaming companies keep cost per DAU down, ultimately making games profitable.
Unlike traditional hardware-virtualized cloud computing infrastructure, which address application performance issues simply by asking customers to spend more on servers in anticipation of demand, Joyent's cloud-native architecture was built from the ground up with performance and application scaling in mind. The Joyent architecture virtualizes machines at the operating system level to manage compute, storage and networking resources in secure SmartOS zones. OS-based virtualization is orders of magnitude more cost effective and higher performing than hardware-based virtualization methods. In addition, these zones uniquely enable instant CPU bursting to smoothly handle spikes in demand. This eliminates the need to over-provision and overpay for virtual machines to accommodate unpredictable spikes in demand.
