LEXINGTON, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/15/13 -- Tokutek, the leader in high-performance and agile database storage engines, today announced a doubling of its customer base and rapid hiring for the year ending December 31, 2012. Significant milestones over the last year for the award-winning company included technology and service partnerships, as well as three upgrades for its flagship product, TokuDB®. And to fuel continued growth in 2013, Tokutek secured additional venture capital funding last November.
"In 2012, Tokutek's technical leadership allowed us build strong sales momentum as MySQL users chose TokuDB to meet their Big Data challenges," said Tokutek CEO John Partridge. "In 2013, as big data expands across organizations of all sizes, Tokutek will be helping our growing number of customers derive more value from their existing database investments."
New customers - Over the past 12 months, Tokutek saw accelerating market adoption of its TokuDB database storage engine as its paying customer base doubled. Tokutek moved into new market areas such as copyright surveillance over networks (Evidenzia), social media monitoring (Swaylo), and machine data (SWRI). Customers range from highly innovative VC-backed companies such as Intent Media to category leader public companies such as Limelight Networks. To support its growing customer base, Tokutek hired engineers and sales professionals.
Product upgrades - Tokutek introduced three upgrades to its TokuDB storage engine, which enables databases running advanced web applications to grow from gigabytes to terabytes while improving insert speed, query performance, compression, and flexibility. In January, TokuDB 5.2 improved multi-client scaling and delivered faster queries. In April, TokuDB v6.0 introduced high performance replication for MySQL and MariaDB. In September, TokuDB v6.5 introduced a flash-optimized version that helped overcome the common constraints of space and longevity associated with flash by extending the life of flash memory while improving compression, performance, and agility.
Tokutek also conducted preliminary benchmark tests with Fractal Tree® indexing on leading NoSQL database, MongoDB. The results were published on ODBMS, an influential database information site.
Awards - In February, Tokutek was selected as a finalist in the Strata 2012 Startup Showcase, where it demonstrated the TokuDB storage engine for MySQL before one of America's most prestigious big data conferences. In October, Tokutek founders Michael Bender and Martin Farach-Colton received a National Science Foundation Grant for Big Data research. Through their academic work, they hope to extend the concept of write optimization as a tool for processing big data. In November, Tokutek CEO John Partridge was one of 15 local entrepreneurs to receive a 2012 Mass High Tech All-Star Award, which recognizes driven and influential leaders of New England's innovation economy.
Partnerships - In addition to being available for download directly from the Tokutek web site, TokuDB is also supported by Tokutek's authorized service partners. Last year a new strategic partnership with PalominoDB, a premier database operations and engineering consultancy, enabled both companies to better provide database services and support to their joint customers.
Funding - Tokutek secured a new funding round of $1.5M in November.
TokuDB is powered by Tokutek's proprietary Fractal Tree indexes, a new data structure that performs up to two orders of magnitude faster than traditional B-Tree technology. TokuDB continues to be the ideal choice for complex high-volume applications that require fast response time and that must simultaneously store and query large volumes of rapidly arriving data. These include social networking applications, real-time clickstream analysis, logfile analysis, ecommerce personalization, and high-speed webcrawling applications. TokuDB is fully compatible with MySQL and MariaDB.
