Collabora Ltd. and Fluendo S.A., two leading companies in open source multimedia, are pleased to announce the GStreamer SDK now enables building multimedia playback applications for Android Operating System.
The latest GStreamer SDK introduces Android support for GStreamer, allowing the powerful framework to be leveraged by Android applications for advanced multimedia capabilities. It also includes improvements for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. It is freely available to download at http://www.gstreamer.com. The GStreamer SDK facilitates the use and implementation of GStreamer, a multimedia framework chosen by many Fortune 500 companies, for the development of cross-platform and cross-architecture applications with multimedia needs, to meet the expectations of server, desktop, mobile, IVI, STB, digital signage environments.
The GStreamer SDK for Android is targeted at API Level 9 (Android 2.3.1, Gingerbread) or higher. However, due to some of the restrictions of previous versions of Android, some features such as hardware acceleration are only available from API Level 16 (Android 4.1, Jelly Bean).
GStreamer.com offers access to development resources
The release of the SDK for Android aims to facilitate the adoption and development of the GStreamer framework on the mobile platforms. Developers have free access to the SDK, extensive documentation, tutorials and instructions for installing GStreamer and getting started.
“Fluendo is very excited about spanning new platforms and adding features to the GStreamer SDK. With the increasing importance of Android in the distribution and consumption of multimedia, the new SDK version will be yet another step in the mission of democratizing the use of GStreamer as a versatile and powerful tool to develop amazing applications everywhere,” said Julien Moutte, co-founder and CTO of Fluendo.
“Collabora is proud to be part of the GStreamer SDK effort to further expand GStreamer's platform support. The latest release brings the full features and capabilities of the GStreamer SDK to Android. This allows application developers to create more powerful, cross-platform multimedia applications all the while facilitating differentiation and value-add for Android platform developers,” said Philippe Kalaf, co-founder and CEO of Collabora.
