Here are today’s top cyber news and stories.
- The USPTO CIO is pro virtualization and open-source - John Owens, CIO of USPTO, has a very delicate budget. Any disruptions to the services come directly out of his budget and affect any potential bonuses. He hopes to provide 100% up-time for his servers, and is aiming for any disruption to be front page news. Via FedScoop, more here.
- Huawei wants cybersecurity test centre - Huawei is looking to build an evaluation centre in Australia. The intent of the facility is to “test the security credentials of technologies being implemented into critical infrastructure projects.” His hopes are to fund the centre by the vendors themselves and oversight provided by cleared Australian nationals. - 5 Goals to improve Infosec skills at DHS - DHS Sec Napolitano and the undersecretary Mark Weatherford are emphasizing how important IT security workforce and skills are. They are looking for a pipeline to fill their needs. Via GovInfoSecurity, more here.
- Microsoft blames smartphone push delay on cyber crime - Microsoft has been severely lagging in the mobile market. They occupy such a small share of the market, and still have yet to release their much vaunted Windows Phone 8. Apparently, their focus on security has distracted them from mobile innovation. - Pentagon to overhaul Science and Technology hiring - According to a report by the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council, the DoD needs to change their STEM hiring and retention procedures. Via NextGov, more here.
